This seminar course examines the major issues that confronted this major European power in an increasingly difficult international environment and the way it attempted to respond. Among the themes addressed: France’s quest for power before 1914; France in the two world wars; its search for security in the interwar period; the influence of imperialism on French global diplomacy; France’s effort to recover a great power status after 1945; De Gaulle’s foreign policy.
