Credit Weight: 0.5 Prerequisite(s): Outdoor Recreation 2810 Description: An examination of the issues involved in understanding and managing human use in and around parks and protected areas. Human dimensions issues are considered in the establishing and management phases of protected area management. In the former, human dimensions analysis focuses upon local and regional stakeholders and the impact of the establishment of parks and protected areas upon existing ways of life. In the latter, human dimensions are examined in two ways: from their demographic, socio-economic and psychological aspects through social carrying capacity; and, from their regional aspects in which parks and protected areas are associated with surrounding communities. Integrating human dimensions information and decision making into ecosystem managment in parks and protected areas is an underlying theme in the course. Guest speakers, case studies and student projects will supplement lectures and seminars.
